Care Guide

When you invest in a Notabene shoe, you invest in well-thought-out design, traditional craftsmanship and the best materials. A quality shoe can, with the right treatment, accompany you for several seasons. Read along here to learn which care products and techniques can help you maintain and extend the life of your new shoes.

All Notabene shoes are created from 100% European natural materials. All our skins are by-products of the food industry, and we carefully select the most beautiful ones for our designs. We believe this is the most responsible thing to do when working with hides, leather and fur, and we can proudly say that even after 25 years in the industry, we are still in constant sustainable development.

Different leathers require different care and treatment, and our series of Care products have been developed especially to extend the life of your Notabene shoes - regardless of material and style. Remember that our knowledgeable staff at NB Shoe Bar are always ready to help, both over the phone and during a visit to the store on Møntergade.

LEATHER

Leather is a strong natural material that, with the right care, can be used season after season and stand the test of time.

When you receive a new leather shoe, we recommend that you impregnate the shoes before putting them into use. We have developed Notabene Protector spray, a transparent impregnation that makes the shoes more resistant to rain and dirt, thereby extending their life and appearance.

The first time you impregnate your shoes, we recommend three impregnations with a drying time of approximately 10 minutes between them. Protector spray must be used outside with a distance to the material of approximately 30 cm. For shoes that are often used, we recommend impregnation every 2-3 years. month.

If the shoes have been exposed to moisture or rain, we recommend that you let them dry slowly at room temperature, preferably with shoe wood inside the shoes, to ensure that the leather keeps its shape, and then impregnate them again. Your leather shoes are best dried at room temperature. We advise against placing the shoes near a radiator or other heat sources, in order to preserve the suppleness of the leather and prevent cracks in the leather.

Several of our heels are made with leather veneer and the soles are made of leather - therefore you can also take care and moisturize them to your advantage.

As a supplement to the impregnation, our Leather Care spray can be used. This transparent spray gives the leather moisture and refreshes the flexibility of the shoes, so that your shoes avoid dampness and minimize creases. You can supplement Leather Care with Leather Cream and Leather Conditioner, which minimize visible scratches with leather color.

SUEDE

Suede is made from the inside of the hide. Proper care of your suede shoes will make them more durable and stay more beautiful over time.

The first time you impregnate your shoes, we recommend three impregnations with a drying time of approximately 10 minutes between them. Protector spray must be used outside with a distance to the material of approximately 30 cm. For shoes that are often used, we recommend impregnation every 2-3 years. month.

We recommend using our Suede & Nubuck Care to refresh the leather. This transparent spray refreshes color and adds nourishing moisture and suppleness. In addition, a good suede brush and a suede eraser can remove light marks and scratches.

In areas that are exposed to wear and tear, you may find that your suede shoes become slippery because the hairs are worn off. This can be remedied by using a suede brush. Careful strokes with the brush should be carried out, lightly over the smooth areas, to lift the fine leather fibers back up, and get the characteristic suede look back.

NUBUCK

Nubuck is a specially processed leather that originates from the inside of the leather. Nubuck has a more matte appearance than the smooth, polished leather and the soft suede. Nubuck is comparable to suede due to the rough surface and requires the same care.

The first time you impregnate your shoes, we recommend three impregnations with a drying time of approximately 10 minutes between them. Protector spray must be used outside with a distance to the material of approximately 30 cm. For shoes that are often used, we recommend impregnation every 2-3 years. month.

VARNISH // PATENT

Some of our styles are made of leather which is coated with a lacquer. Therefore, the shoe must neither be impregnated nor cared for with shoe cream. Clean with a damp cloth. Lacquered shoes benefit from a lacquer oil that gives the lacquer depth of color and shine again. Apply the oil with a soft cloth and polish afterwards.

EMBOSSED LEATHER

Shoes with snakeskin or crocodile-embossed leather are coated with lacquer, and therefore must not be sprayed with impregnation. Coated leather is largely maintenance-free, but benefits from being wiped with a slightly damp cloth if they have become dirty, and then regularly cared for with a spray specially developed for lacquer and coated leather.

FABRIC

Care and maintenance may vary depending on the material. As always, you are welcome to contact us for more information on the care instructions for your particular shoes.

The first time you impregnate your shoes, we recommend three impregnations with a drying time of approximately 10 minutes between them. Protector spray must be used outside with a distance to the material of approximately 30 cm. For shoes that are often used, we recommend impregnation every 2-3 years. month.

If the shoes have been exposed to moisture or rain, we recommend that you let them dry slowly at room temperature, preferably with shoe wood inside the shoes to ensure that the fabric keeps its shape, and then impregnate them before using again.

In the case of stains, you can clean the shoes with a mild soap solution, which is massaged in with a soft brush - the shoes should not be wet, just moistened. Then wipe them off with a damp cloth and let them dry. After cleaning and care, the shoe is impregnated again.

SOLES

Leather soles

Leather soles give the shoe an exclusive look and ensure that breathability is at its best, but also require good maintenance for a long life. It is therefore recommended to have your leather soles pre-soled by a shoemaker before they are put into use.

If you do not choose to have the soles pre-soled, it is recommended that the soles be lubricated with a neutral shoe cream at least once a month, to keep the leather flexible and seal it as best as possible. Avoid using your shoes with leather soles in the rain, but if the accident should still happen, it is important to let them dry at room temperature at your own pace. Drying by radiators or other heating devices can dry out and damage the leather and cause cracks.

The vast majority of shoes in our collections have a melted-on rubber sole, so you don't need to have them re-soled at a shoemaker. You can see in the product description of each style, under Material & Care, whether it has a full leather sole or a fused rubber sole.

Soles in natural rubber

Several of our loafers have a natural rubber outer sole. Natural rubber is a sustainable material that is extracted from the sap from the bark of the rubber tree, Hevea Brasiliensis. Soles made of this material do not need much maintenance, but can be advantageously wiped over with a damp cloth if necessary. Over time, you may find that natural rubber soles dry out a little, but this can be remedied by lubricating the soles with a natural oil.
